Planning a Canadian fly-in fishing trip comes with a few questions. Here are answers to some of the things guests ask most before visiting Cat Island Lodge on Trout Lake, Ontario.
Do I need to arrange my own floatplane flight?
No. Round-trip floatplane transportation is included with your stay. Once you arrive at our water base in Ear Falls, Ontario, our team coordinates your flight, luggage loading, departure, and arrival at Cat Island Lodge.
Your fly-in adventure begins from the water base and takes you directly into the remote wilderness of Trout Lake.
What is included with my stay at Cat Island Lodge?
Cat Island Lodge's American Plan includes waterfront accommodations, round-trip floatplane transportation, breakfast, three-course dinners, guided fishing, traditional shore lunches, and access to lodge amenities.
Fishing packages also include the boats, motors, and other essentials needed for your time on Trout Lake, so you can spend less time worrying about logistics and more time enjoying the trip.
Do I need to bring my own fishing gear?
You are welcome to bring the rods, reels, and tackle you already enjoy using. Rental rods, reels, and basic tackle are also available with advance reservation.
Our guides can help recommend tackle and techniques based on the species, season, and conditions on Trout Lake.
Do I need an Ontario fishing license?
Anglers age 18 and older need a valid Ontario Outdoors Card and fishing license before fishing. Children under 18 may fish under a licensed adult, although any fish they keep count toward that adult's limits.
We recommend arranging your license before your trip so everything is ready before you arrive.
What should I pack for a fly-in fishing trip?
Pack comfortable layers, dependable rain gear, sturdy footwear, toiletries, medications, and any fishing equipment you would like to use. Weather in Northwestern Ontario can change quickly, so clothing that can be layered is especially useful.
Soft-sided duffel bags are preferred because they are easier to load and store on the floatplane. Guests receive additional trip-preparation information before arrival.
Do I need to bring food or drinks?
American Plan meals are provided during your stay, including breakfast, dinner, and shore lunch while fishing. You're welcome to bring favorite snacks or specialty items if you would like.
Beverages can also be pre-ordered and waiting in your cabin when you arrive, helping reduce the amount of weight you need to bring on the floatplane.
Can you accommodate dietary needs or food allergies?
Yes. Our kitchen can accommodate many dietary restrictions and food allergies with advance notice. Please share the needs of everyone in your group before arrival so our team has time to plan and prepare.
Is Cat Island Lodge family friendly?
Absolutely. Families return to Cat Island Lodge year after year to share first catches, time on the water, wildlife, and traditions that can span generations.
Children ages 12 and under receive 50% off package prices, while young anglers ages 13–17 receive 25% off.
Is a fly-in fishing trip suitable for beginners?
Yes. You do not need years of fishing experience to enjoy Cat Island Lodge. Our guides can adapt the day to your comfort and experience level, helping first-time anglers build confidence while giving experienced anglers opportunities to target walleye, northern pike, and lake trout.
When is the best time to visit Cat Island Lodge?
Trout Lake offers excellent fishing throughout the open-water season, but the experience changes as water temperatures and fish behavior shift throughout the summer.
If you have a particular species or style of fishing in mind, ask our team about the best timing for walleye, northern pike, or lake trout before booking.
Are gratuities expected?
Gratuities are never expected but are always greatly appreciated. Locked gratuity boxes are available in the dining area to be split between the in-camp staff, which includes the cook, server, kitchen team, housekeeping, and dock hands.
Most guests personally tip their guides between $50–$100 per person, per day, based on their experience.
